Position Overview

Living Proof is seeking a passionate and creative Senior Research Scientist to join our Discovery team to help develop new materials and technologies for hair care applications.  This position will report to the Principal Scientist.  This is a paid, full time, position based in Boston, MA.  Immediate start date ideal.

 Key Responsibilities

The Senior Research Scientist will contribute to the innovation pipeline and be responsible for designing and developing new materials for hair care applications from concept to product launch. Key responsibilities include:

  • Work with the Discovery members and cross-functional teams to develop novel materials and highly innovative technologies for use in various hair care applications.
  • Hands-on synthesis, functionalization, and characterization of small molecules and polymer materials
  • Design of experiments to reveal quantitative structure activity relationships between material properties and in vitro & in vivo performance.
  • Serve as an expert in the Discovery team for hair care formulation.
  • Collaborate with contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs) and oversee development, scale up, and final commercialization activities.
  • Support tech transfer to both internal product development team and external CMO partners.
  • Develop and validate protocols for materials synthesis, characterization, and performance evaluation.
  • Author and review technical reports, patents, and external publications.
  • Present project results or technologies at various internal and external meetings and events.

Preferred Skills and Experience


  • Proven track record of applying fundamental research to new product development.
  • Experience with functionalization and delivery of small molecules, amino acids, or proteins is desirable.
  • Strong background in novel formulation and process development and good understanding of early phase formulation development activities.
  • Extensive laboratory skills in material characterization, including TGA, DSC, FTIR, Raman, NMR, AFM, SEM, Rheology, and mechanical testing.
  • Understanding of structure activity relationships and utilization towards application development.
  • The ability to work in a team-oriented environment that embraces change, risk, and flexibility is needed. 
  • This individual must be capable of handling multiple projects/tasks concurrently and collaborating across disciplines. 
  • A demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team with sense of urgency against timelines is needed.
  • This individual will have the potential to lead technical aspects within project teams. 
  • The successful candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.  
  • A passion and enthusiasm for innovation will be an asset. 
  • Proven problem-solving skills and good interpersonal relationship and people skills will be needed.
  • A strong scientific track record including peer-review publications, patents, grants, and collaborations.
  • Direct experience working with CMOs is a plus



  • Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of industrial or equivalent experience in the design and synthesis of small molecules and polymers, materials modification and characterization, and formulation development.
